What time does school start and finish?
Our day begins at 8:45 am and finishes at 2:30 pm. We ask that students arrive by 8:30 am so they have time to get organised before the bell.
What should I do if my child is going to be absent?
Please let the office know before 9:00 am. You can report an absence via the school answerphone, by emailing office@hukerenui.school.nz or by calling the office. If we haven't heard from you, we will send a text to ensure your child is safe.
What happens if we arrive late?
If the 8:45 am bell has already gone, please come into the office to sign your child in before they head to class. This ensures our attendance records are accurate for the day.
My child is unwell—when can they return to school?
To keep our community healthy, students must stay home for 48 hours after their last bout of vomiting or diarrhea. For other illnesses, they should stay home until they are 24 hours fever-free.
Can the school administer medication?
Yes, but only if the medication is handed into the office by an adult and a consent form is signed. Students should not keep medication (including Panadol or inhalers) in their school bags.
How much are the school donations?
Hukerenui School is part of the government donation scheme, so we do not ask for an annual school donation.
Do I need to buy a full stationery pack from the school?
No, we do not sell full classroom sets. Parents are responsible for purchasing stationery at the start of the year. However, the office does sell individual replacement items (pencils, glue sticks, etc.) if your child runs out during the term.
How do school lunches work?
Every student is eligible for a free healthy lunch provided by Compass. These are delivered fresh daily. Please ensure the office is aware of any specific dietary requirements or allergies.
What is the school policy on cell phones?
Phones and other devices are not permitted at Hukerenui School or on the school buses.
Can my child wear jewellery or makeup?
To keep the focus on learning, we ask that makeup, fake nails, lashes, and extreme hair colours are left for the weekends. For safety, only plain studs or sleepers may be worn in ears.
How can I help out at school?
We love having parent helpers! Whether it's reading in class or supervising a trip, you are very welcome. Please note that all overnight camp volunteers are required to complete a confidential police vet form at the office.
How do I give feedback or raise a concern?
We value open communication and a "no surprises" approach. If you have a suggestion or a worry, please reach out to your child's teacher first. If you'd like to discuss things further, our Principal's door is always open.
