Heritage and History of the Settlement and School
Hukerenui is a settlement in Northland, New Zealand, situated 30 km north of Whangārei on State Highway 1, between Kawakawa and Hikurangi. The settlement began as Hukerenui South in 1886 under the Village Homestead Special Settlement system, with the first 25 families arriving the following year. Early income came from gum digging (until 1888), a flax mill at Towai, and road building. Hukerenui School, established in 1889, has a rich history as the heart of the community. In 1957, the Hukerenui District High School was built; when it closed in 1973, the Primary School shifted to that site, while the original primary buildings now house the tennis club and cub/scout den. The school, which amalgamated several smaller area schools in 1949, celebrated its centennial in 1989 and its 125th reunion in 2014. The wider settlement remains home to the Jack Morgan Museum, Hukerenui Bar & Cafe, Hukerenui & Districts Memorial Hall, and the cemetery.
