Sports & the outdoors

Close ties are kept with the surrounding schools for sporting events.  We host zones swimming and cross country events here, and visit other hosts for athletics, and winter sport events.

We participate in all sport coaching we can possibly find, eg.  Sport northland who provides us with swimming, hockey, netball, rugby, cricket, etc. each year as well as our own Hukerenui School Netball teams, coached here at school.

Camps and trips are an integral part of our outdoor curriculum!

Swimming Sports

At Hukerenui School we are fortunate to have a 20 metre swimming pool with a shallow area for our less confident swimmers. The pool is open every day over summer (Terms 4 and 1). In February we have our annual swimming sports event and zones swimming sports events when we invite surrounding school to compete against our top swimmers.

Each year, Sport Northland run a very valuable Swim for Life Program with all students.

Maromaku Sports Day

In June each year we participate at the Maromaku Winter Sports Day where our children can play Rugby or Netball against surrounding Northland schools. The competition is very strong at this event and we really appreciate the time put in by our parents and staff who volunteer to train a team.

Athletics Day

Our annual event is in Term 4.  Parents are welcome to spend the day with us.

Cross Country

In term 3 we host the zone cross country event and invite our neighboring schools along to compete.  This is a well organised fun and competitive event which the children look forward to each year.  Children who place 1st, 2nd or 3rd are invited to compete at the Whangarei Schools event.

Hukerenui School Netball

Since 2017, with the help of parents, our school created the Hukerenui School Netball teams to play Saturday Netball in Whangarei.  Over 30 students sign up each year to play for a team.  In 2019 our Year 7 & 8 team placed 3rd in section 4 and in 2023 the team placed 2nd in section 2, which is a great achievement for a small rural school!

Thank you to our parents who have supported this initiative.
